Women’s Basketball Team Completes Coaching Staff

New Coaching Hire Claire Mattox Comes to AU from Cornell

Today, the athletic department announced that they have hired Claire Mattox as the women’s basketball team’s third assistant coach.

As noted above, she comes to AU after three years on the coaching staff at Cornell. While there, she seemed to work mostly with the guards. Cornell credits her work with contributing to their prolific assist numbers (15.5 ast/g, 43rd in the country) in 2019-2020. After that first year, Coach Mattox was named to the WBCA’s Thirty under 30 list.

Prior to Cornell, she spent three years as assistant coach at Vassar and two years at the University of Saint Mary. Significantly, Claire Mattox had recruiting coordinator responsibilities while at USM, a role that needs filling on AU’s staff.

Mattox spent her college days on the other side of the Chesapeake. Attending Washington College, she started for the women’s basketball team all four years and was named a senior captain. She also graduated WBCA’s “So You Want To Be A Coach” program in 2014, five years before her now co-coach Kaity Healy did the same.

With the staff now fully in place, it’s likely that Mattox focuses on recruitment while chipping in on Coach Healy’s work with the guards. Coach Coll will probably take position responsibility for the wings, while working with Coach Mattox on other program-level duties.
