So Long, Megan Gebbia

So Long, Megan Gebbia

The AU athletic department announced on Thursday that women’s head basketball coach Megan Gebbia has accepted the same role at Wake Forest.

Coach Gebbia has been the most successful coach by far in AU women’s basketball history. Gebbia led the Eagles to the NCAA tournament three times in her nine years at the helm, including their program-first berth in the 2014-15 season . She’s the winningest coach in program history, having surpassed Jeff Thatcher (1989-2000) this past February. Her career winning percentage of over 60% is second to only Matt Corkery (2008-13).

The above article also details how her coaching has benefited the individuals on her teams:

The two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year mentored some of the most successful student-athletes to ever wear the red, white, and blue, including five Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, four Patriot League Players of the Year, three CoSIDA Academic All-District selections, and one CoSIDA Academic All-American and Division I-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Her players have also garnered 27 All-Patriot League awards and nine All-Academic honors.

While it’s a bummer to see her go, you can’t blame someone for taking the jump from a Patriot League program to the ACC. The Deacons aren’t a powerhouse by any means – they haven’t had a winning record in conference play since 1988 – but being in a power conference provides the opportunity for an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. Given her track record at AU, she certainly has the ability to improve on Wake Forest’s two NCAA tournament appearances. Here’s hoping that Coach Megan Gebbia finds as much success in Winston-Salem as she did at Bender Arena.

The athletic department has indicated that they’ll conduct a national search for her replacement. You would expect that Associate Head Coach Tiffany Coll gets a look. More on this search and other potential candidates later.
