As we get deeper into the summer and the season approaches, I felt it important to get a handle on who was going to be filling out the women’s basketball roster, what the class breakdown is, and how many scholarship slots are filled. This breakdown will now have its own dedicated page on the site.
Last year, the women’s team had 14 of their 15 scholarship slots filled, possibly due to two players transferring out. This year, we are looking at six departing players and three new additions, leaving us with 11 rostered players.
Laura Graytok is the only senior from last year’s team returning for a grad year. It appears that Maddie Doring has graduated, as I could find nothing announcing a transfer nor any other team listing her on their roster. The other seniors all transferred: Taylor Brown to NDSU, Jade Edwards to DePaul, and Emily Fisher to TCU.
We also had a couple undergrad transfers: Karla Vres left for Ohio State and Jordyn Meunier for Villanova. In Meunier’s case, it’s unclear whether she’s continuing to play basketball, or if this was solely an academic transfer.
The Eagles brought two undergrad transfers in, however. Marisa Lee transferred to American from Hartford, at least in part due to their transition to Division III. Anna LeMaster comes to AU from the Dayton Flyers.
Now that the July period for evaluation of high school recruits has come to a close, it will be interesting to see if the coaching staff pursues another transfer or two. While most players have found a landing spot, there are a good number still in the portal. With plenty roster space for the 2023-24 season, the coaching staff shouldn’t be shy about pursuing undergraduate transfers.
It’s also possible Sadie Stetson and Lauren Stack return next season, given the roster space.
