Quick Notes: Women’s Basketball Makes A Splash

  • Announced last week but more publicized this week: the women’s basketball team will be playing in the “Goombay Splash” this year. This event hosts six teams in Bimini, Bahamas over Thanksgiving weekend. It’s not quite a tournament, as AU already knows who its opponents will be. This is one of those Multi-Team Events (MTEs) that allow teams to play more than 29 games in a season. The athletic department is yet to release a full non-conference schedule.
  • The Patriot League released the Academic Honor Roll for the 2021-22 year. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams placed ten players on this year’s list. The men’s team improved from last year’s mark, when eight members of the team made the PL Honor Roll.
  • Lorenzo Donadio has been hooping it up in Europe. The rising junior has been playing in a FIBA 3×3 (which FIBA insists is pronounced “three-ex-three“) tour for his homeland Italy. 3×3 is reminiscent of who you might have played on a playground. Play is only half-court, they check the ball after stoppages, and use 1 & 2 point scoring instead of 2 & 3. This game also utilizes a smaller ball and has a 12-second shot clock, which results in a lot of isolation with the occasional kickout. In limited viewing, Donadio grabbed some nice rebounds, but there didn’t seem to be much that would translate to what AU runs. FIBA posts replays on their YouTube channel if you want to catch him in action.
